While reading the essay “The Native Son” by James Baldwin I discovered that it is about the death of his father, which takes place in 1943, and the relationship between “White” and “Black” America. Baldwin was able to relate both of these stories to one another.
Baldwin was not fond of his father, and barely got the chance to be familiar with him. It was very similar for those of White and Black America. The Blacks were not respected by the Whites, and there was a lack of communication. So in a sense the Whites did not know the Blacks, and vice versa. Baldwin hated his father, because he treated him differently from his other siblings. In the eyes of Baldwin his father was an angry person. Baldwin’s father’s anger came from EXTREME dislike of White people. Before Baldwin’s father dies he leaves Baldwin with a piece of advice. He says, to never trust a white person, because they will go to extreme measures to bring and keep a colored person inferior.
After Baldwin moves to New Jersey he experienced why father is was always angry, upset, and bitter. Then it happened a gang of white people were running after him; his first experience with segregation. In the Story James makes it clear that this was a fearsome experience for him. After this incident took place Baldwin began to hate White people just like his father, which was a scary thing for him.
