" Just Walk on by: Black Men and Public Space"

In Brent Staples Just Walk on by: Black Men and Public Space I identified with both the black man and the white woman. I identified with the black man because this has happen to me before as well. I was walking down the street in some sweat and a little old lady was getting ready to pass me. Just like I always do, I spoke she held on her purse on her shoulder and crossed to the other side of the street. When this first happened I really felt like a suspect. I was upset, and kind of hurt; to know that I couldn’t even walked down the streets of LA where I was born and raised without being judged. On the other hand I could identify with the white woman because, I have also felt unsafe when I seen a stranger, and made prejudice statements. I think that it is in one human nature, and a part of their naturalistic side. For example let’s examine the movie Crash; the white women was races for making a prejudice statement, but looked what happened to her she ended up getting car jacked. When it comes to maters like this I think a person just needs to be wise and use their best judgment. I highly think that gender and ethnicity play a big part in prejudging others. I feel that if you are a minority others already see you as a suspect; you could be dressed in the finest clothes, and it wouldn’t matter. I think that this is the Medias fault. They want to make movies that will sell so they make minorities look bad; like they are steal, always do drugs. When watching the news all you hear is about the crimes that have happen in Compton, or Huntington Park. When reading this essay I felt relieved to know that I am not the only person that this happens to. I also became dismayed to know that prejudice does exist and will always, and someone will always be a victim.
